Tonka Water’s Unitized Treatment System (UTS™) utilizes a three-stage process of flocculation, settling, and filtration. UTS™ systems are versatile, used to remove turbidity in challenging surface waters.

The town of Antonito, Colorado, was in need of a new water treatment plant. With the assistance of Tonka Water, a U.S. Water brand, they worked to design a new water treatment system meeting both ten state standards and Colorado standards for conventional surface water treatment. The system includes Tonka Water’s Unitized Treatment System™ (UTS™) featuring a Simul-Wash™ backwash system. This robust system is easy to operate and allows for flexible chemical application.

AN ENHANCED COAGULATION FILTRATION TREATMENT PROCESS

Tonka Water’s UTS™ is an enhanced coagulation filtration treatment process in a single packaged unit. The UTS™ surface water treatment unit consists of an integral two-stage flocculation compartment, tube settling, and filter compartments. The filters contain a dual media of silica sand and anthracite, and feature Tonka Water’s Simul-Wash™ backwash system. Chemical addition occurs prior to the flocculation zone to assist in turbidity removal. Following flocculation, the water travels through high-efficiency tube settlers, removing the majority of solids prior to filtration.

Tonka Water’s UTS™ utilizes collapse pulse backwash technology by combining air and water at subfluidized flow rates. The Simul-Wash™ trough allows the simultaneous air/water backwash cycle to be extended indefinitely without the loss of media. This extends filter runs, lengthens the useful life of the filter media, prevents mudballs, and frees nearly all captured filter debris, using fifty percent less backwash water than convention backwash systems.

STATE-OF-THE-ART PERFORMANCE

The water treatment system design uses state-of-the-art technology to maximize treatment plant production and minimize operating costs. Since its commissioning in 2017, the Antonito treatment plant has been meeting water treatment expectations.

The treatment plant also includes Tonka Water’s value-added Simul-Wash™ backwash system. This unique backwash system uses air and water simultaneously, at sub-fluidized rates, to provide the most effective means of backwashing granular filter media. Tonka Water’s media rejecting Simul-Wash™ trough enables the air and water backwash cycle to continue indefinitely without media loss. This results in optimal filter cleaning efficiency and prolonged filter runs, while saving approximately 50 percent of backwash wastewater compared to conventional methods.
